I really love these old paper lace holy cards. My mother had a collection of these holy cards from her childhood and earlier. They are mine now... and I cherish them.
These holy cards have so much more beauty and workmanship than most of the cards of today. One or two of my holy cards even have hand painted lace. They are truly works of art from a bygone era.
There are other cards in my collection that are almost as old as the lace ones and are equally beautiful. Some of them came from pilgrimage places in Germany and are like small triptychs, opening up to show the church where people venerated a statue or shrine.
There are other holy cards that commemorate the first Mass celebrated by a newly ordained priest. Some of the cards are memorials to persons who have passed. One wonders who these people were and it is easy to whisper a silent prayer for these forgotten souls.
